While you are excited and happy to be moving into a new home, your children might not be able to share in that enthusiasm for a number of reasons. If you are moving to Grand Junction from out of town, then you might have some upset youngsters who worry about starting at a new school and making new friends. Kids may miss their old home and their old room. Even those kids who are on board with moving may not be good when it comes to actually moving, such as packing and unpacking.
Try to make the move as exciting as possible for them, and keep assuring them that it’s going to be great in the new home. Keep talking up the new home and the community. To make the packing a bit easier, consider having a moving sale before you actually start packing, and let the kids join in with the sale. Let them choose some of their own items to sell, for example.
Tell them that with the money they make from the sale, they could get a new game or some other treat once they are in the new home. While this might sound like out and out bribery, the real purpose behind it is to get their mind onto something enjoyable and off the scariness of moving. Let the kids visit the house, or at least show them some pictures of their new room. Talk with them about some fun ideas for decorating the room.
Find new things to do in the area. Grand Junction has some great things to do, so make plans with the kids about some of the places you can visit as soon as you settle into the new place. Again, this serves to get them excited about the move.
