Hiring a remodeling contractor can be an uncertain (even intimidating) affair. With so many options, along with so many tales of remodels gone wrong, how should you go about sorting through the minutiae and finding the contractor that is the best fit with your vision for your home?

With this in mind, here are a few tips to help you in moving forward with your remodel, and choose the contractor that will best fulfill your needs.

Educate Yourself First

Always do your homework. This is necessary for the project you have in mind, as well as the individual you will ultimately entrust to execute it. Read up on the materials and processes involved, and gain your own understanding of what will be required to bring your ideas to fruition. In doings so, you will be far more prepared to interview potential contractors, and to assess their ability to meet your needs.

Interview Multiple Contractors 

You’re anxious to get your project underway, and naturally there is an inclination to hire the first contractor that is properly licensed and has a demonstrated track record. But the real question is—are they right for you?

It’s important to give yourself options, and ask the same pertinent questions of multiple candidates. You can ask questions such as:

  • Have you taken on many projects of this scale?
  • Do you feel confident that you can obtain the necessary permits?
  • What is your estimated timeframe for completion?

Listen to their answers; you’re looking for a demonstrated knowledge, as well as assuredness and professionalism. Bear in mind that this is someone who will be coming into your home on a regular basis for a while, so make sure they have presented themselves in a way that makes you feel comfortable.
