As a homeowner, the last thing you want is an accident on Halloween. (It’s right around the corner, and if you’re selling your home, you might want to skip Halloween decorations—but that’s another story.)
So how can you make sure you, your family, and all the cute ghosts and goblins who stop by are safe this Halloween?
Halloween Homeowner Safety Tips
It never hurts to remind trick-or-treaters not to run between houses and to stick to well-lit driveways and sidewalks—and you can say it as you’re heaping candy into their pillowcases or pumpkin-shaped baskets.
Other than that, here’s what you can do.
Halloween Safety Tip #1: Use Lots of Electric Light
It’s going to be dark when many kids will be out trick-or-treating, so make sure your porch light is on. However, steer clear of using lit candles or luminaries; they’re a fire hazard for your property and for the trick-or-treaters, who could inadvertently kick them over.
Halloween Safety Tip #2: Keep Pathways Clear
Make sure that the path between your driveway or the sidewalk to your front door doesn’t have anything kids could trip on, and repair uneven walkway stones or loose railings before the big night.
Halloween Safety Tip #3: Keep Your Pets Contained
Many pets have a tough time dealing with the constant excitement of repeated knocks or doorbell rings, and when pets are scared, they can bolt right out your front door. The ASPCA recommends keeping your pets confined in a separate room—one that’s far from the front door.
Halloween Safety Tip #4: Sit on the Porch
Rather than opening and closing your door all evening, sit on the porch to greet trick-or-treaters. You don’t want to give strangers a look inside your house (or let them physically come in). Double-check that all your homeowner’s insurance documents are in order, just in case.
