Whether you’re staging your home for sale or making yourself at home in your new home, you may be eyeing the back yard as the perfect place to entertain guests. Who doesn’t love to grill and eat dinner on the patio with friends?
Patio Tip #1: Start With a Barefoot-Friendly Surface
Whether stone, tiles, concrete or wood, you’ll probably want to go barefoot on your deck or patio at least occasionally. Make sure your outdoor flooring feels nice on bare feet, but doesn’t get slippery when damp or wet. This may mean sanding rough boards or replacing cracked tiles.
Patio Tip #2: Set Up a Food Prep Area
Appoint an area for food preparation and grilling, somewhat away from the eating area. This can be as simple as a high table near the grill, or as ornate as an outdoor kitchen. For drinks, a decorate ice tub may be more festive than the ubiquitous cooler.
Patio Tip #3: Look Up!
Canopies, umbrellas and shade sails are all excellent options for keeping sun and rain from bothering your guests. At night, strategic lighting can keep the party going. Lanterns or decorative string lights are attractive features. Alternatively, you can light your deck or patio with tiki torches and candles.
Patio Tip #4: Invest in Comfortable Outdoor Furniture
Select outdoor furnishings for comfort as well as style. If you choose wood or metal chairs, you can use—and occasionally change—decorative cushions to keep guests happy. The patio is an excellent place for fun furnishings such as a porch swing, chaise lounges or a storage bench.
