We all know that first impressions are important, whether you’re buying a condo in Fruita or you’re selling a luxury home in Grand Junction. They’re so important, actually, that they can make or break a deal.
So what can you do to make sure that buyers don’t hate your house when you’re selling?
Why Buyers Hate Some Houses
Some buyers and homes mix like… well, like oil and water. The biggest turnoffs: pets, odors, grime, and dim lighting.
Pets Can Send Buyers Running
Sure, you love your four-legged family member (and we do, too, for the record), but not all buyers are animal fans.
That means when people come to see your home, you need to relocate your pets. You can’t put them in another room and then ask buyers not to open the door, and you can’t leave them in crates, either. A trip to the dog park or a ride around the neighborhood is probably in order each time someone comes to see your home.
Odors Can Hit Buyers Like a Ton of Bricks
Odors are one of the biggest turn-offs buyers report, whether they’re smelling old cigarette smoke or those pets you just took for a ride around the block.
It’s not good enough to cover up the odors with fragrances. You have to get rid of them, which may require professional cleaning, before you start showing your home.
Grime? No Thanks
When buyers go into a bathroom, they want it to look like it’s never been used. That means your personal towels and toiletries have to go; temporarily replace towels with brand-new ones that your family isn’t allowed to touch. It also means that everything needs to be spotless—and once you’re done scouring the bathrooms, hit the kitchen, too.
Dim Lighting Leaves Buyers Frustrated
Most buyers are turned off by dimly lit homes. If you can, invest in some lamps, and always make sure the window dressings are wide open to let in as much natural light as possible.
