If you’re like most people looking to buy a home in the Grand Junction area, you probably have a clear list of features you want in your new home. With all the differences between homes for sale, there may be a few points that can be easy to overlook—at least, they are until after you’ve moved in.
Are You Okay With the Neighborhood’s Sound Levels?
It’s important to remember that when you view a home for sale, you are only getting perhaps a one-hour snapshot of the area’s noise level. Scope out the area for sources of noise you may find bothersome:
- Railroad tracks
- Proximity to an airport
- Nightclubs, industry or other loud places of business
If a home interests you, you may want to walk about the neighborhood at different times of day. Depending on your tolerance, a neighbor with a garage workshop filled with power tools could be a deal-breaker.
What’s the Home’s Storage Like?
While basements, attics and garages are great for your camping gear and seasonal décor, you’ll want adequate storage space for everyday things. Look around and think about where you’d keep your vacuum cleaner, broom and other cleaning supplies. Is there a place for your towels and linens? Sufficient cupboard and pantry space in the kitchen is often a concern as well.
Checking All the Windows, Walls and Compass Points
If you don’t have a compass, get a free app for your smartphone. Don’t be shy about using it when you view a home for sale. It can be very helpful to know which rooms are sunny and warm, and which are cooler and get only indirect sunlight. Your houseplants (and your wallet, when the utility bills start rolling in) will thank you.
Walking and Biking: Is Your Community Accessible?
The ability to walk or ride your bike to a market, restaurant or park can be a benefit on many levels. Walking is healthy and short car trips can be a hassle. If there’s nothing “walkable” nearby, ask yourself if you’ll be happy with that. You may also want to keep in mind that high “walk scores” make a home easier for you to sell when it comes time.
