If you’re buying a new home in Grand Junction, you have a big move in the near future—but how will you make sure everything goes smoothly?
What to Do Before You Move
Before you move, you’ll have to pack. Unfortunately for many people, that’s the worst part.
So what can you do?
Ditch everything you don’t need. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in a year, it’s time to get rid of it.
“You may be a pack rat, but the truth is, you won’t ever use most of the junk you’ve accumulated. If you haven’t used it in the last year, get rid of it. It’s as simple as that. If you’ve only used it once or twice in the last year, but know you won’t use it in the next year, get rid of it. Toss it if it’s unsalvageable, and give it away if someone else might be able to use it,” says Leo Babauta, author of The Power of Less.
Gather all your supplies early, too. Chances are that as you inch toward moving day, you’ll discover that you need even more (another roll of tape, five more boxes for the kids’ toys…), so you’ll have plenty of time to get it.
If you’re moving on your own instead of hiring a company to do it for you, invest in some moving blankets and a few rolls of stretch film, too. Your TV, furniture, and collectibles will thank you.
Change your address with the U.S. Postal Service well in advance of your move. You can choose the date you wish to forward your mail, so you don’t have to worry about things being lost in the shuffle.
