If you’re buying a new home or you’re improving your existing one before you put it on the market, you may be thinking about the benefits of cork flooring.
It’s not a common flooring material–at least not yet–but it might be a great idea if you’re looking for something resilient and unique.
However, if you’re selling your home in Grand Junction or the surrounding communities, don’t make any home improvements without checking with your Realtor(R) first. Many improvements don’t pay for themselves in resale value.
A Word on Cork Flooring
As a flooring material, cork is resilient, warm and comfortable to walk and stand on; that makes it a great alternative to carpet. It’s especially nice for those who have allergies and those who prefer low-maintenance floors.
- Available in several shades
- Easy to maintain
- Can be patched easily if damaged
Cork is also very popular with homeowners who have radiant heat systems because it carries the heat very well.
It’s extremely environmentally friendly, as well. The trees it comes from regenerate their bark, and harvesters minimize the damage so they can reuse them (the trees typically live for 100 to 200 years).
Drawbacks to Cork Floors
Heavy furniture can dent cork flooring, so you’ll need to use furniture pads and rugs wherever possible. It can also fade in direct sunlight, and because it’s spongy, pets can damage it as well.
Where Does Cork Come From?
Cork comes from the bark of trees–typically in Europe and Africa–and when it’s used in flooring, it’s typically processed in Portugal.
The flooring you see in homes is made from the scraps leftover from bottle corks. It’s ground and pressed into boards, planks and tiles.
